Obituary for Mr. Joseph L. Carver

September 20, 1929 - November 15, 2016
East Walpole, Massachusetts | Age 87

Joseph L. Carver, age 87, passed away peacefully in his East Walpole, Massachusetts home on Tuesday, November 15, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on September 20, 1929, he was the son of the late Reginald and Mary (Gebhardt) Carver. He was raised in Roslindale, where he loved playing both hockey and softball on local teams. Joe graduated from Hyde Park High School with the Class of 1947. He continued with his job working as a soda jerk in a local drug store, before taking a position with the Boston Edison Company in their mailroom. After getting his foot in the door with the Edison, he began working his way up in the company, working as a lineman for many years. In January of 1951, Joe enlisted in the Air National Guard and was stationed at Logan Airport.

Later that same year, Joe married his loving wife, Joan M. Hannon, on September 15. Together they made their home in Roslindale before settling in East Walpole in 1957, where they raised their family. Joe and Joan quickly became members of Saint Mary's Church and Joe heard a call to serve his community, joining the Walpole Fire Department as a call fireman. He went on to work in the Fire Alarm Division for many years.

Joe remained active in the Air National Guard for 39 years and was stationed in Wellesley and at Otis Air Force Base on Cape Cod. He retired from the Guard as a Master Sergeant after seeing most of the world. His 42-year long career with the Edison came to an end in 1998 with his retirement from the company, serving as a construction inspector for many years. He made many friends while at the Edison and always enjoyed a pickup game of horseshoes after a long day at work.

In his retirement, Joe enjoyed woodworking and traveling. He and Joan took 43 cruises after he retired, often taking their children and grandchildren with them. As a young man, Joe enjoyed fishing with his father and as he got older, his love for fishing grew. He spent countless hours with his girls fishing on the Cape Cod Canal, deep sea fishing out of Bar Harbor, Maine, and he looked forward to his annual fishing trip to Maynard's on Moosehead Lake in Maine to spend time with his buddies from work. Most of all, Joe loved being with his family, he worked hard to ensure his daughters' needs were always met, but it was the time that he spent with them that he truly treasured.
