John Charles Rooney, age 77, passed away in the Veterans Administration Hospital in West Roxbury on Tuesday, September 5, 2017. Born in Norwood, Massachusetts on June 5, 1940, he was the son of the late John F. and Eva S. (Swanson) Rooney. As a lifelong resident of Walpole, Massachusetts, he graduated from Walpole High School with the Class of 1958, where he was a member of the New England Championship Hockey Team. After graduation, he attended Bridgton Academy before continuing his education at Northeastern University.

John was inducted into the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War as a paratrooper. He was honorably discharged in February of 1968 after earning the rank of Sergeant. Upon his return from the Army, John settled back in his hometown of Walpole. He married his wife, Judith A. McGough, on February 24, 1973 in the chapel at Dean Junior College and John took a sales position with the Spaulding Company. After his 25-year long career with Spaulding, John retired and took a sales job with Dedham Wholesale Times.

John was a devoted member of his Walpole community, he served as a Walpole King Philip Hockey Coach for many years and was a founding member of the Walpole Hockey Boosters program. As a proud Vietnam Veteran, he joined the Walpole VFW Post 5188 and served as Commander of the Post from 2008 through 2010.

Beloved husband of Judith A. (McGough) Rooney.
Loving father of Keith P. Rooney and his wife Angela of Media, Pennsylvania.
Devoted brother of Daid J. Rooney of Dracut, Barbara Kunelius and her husband Paul of South Dennis, and Paul Rooney and his wife Mary Ann of Norwood.
Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend John's Life Celebration on Sunday, September 10, 2017 from 2-5 PM in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home, 48 Common Street, Walpole. A Funeral Home Service will be held on Monday, September 11, 2017 at 10:00 AM. Interment will be in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Dept. 41831, P.O. Box 650309, Dallas, TX 75265.
