Obituary

Harry C. Tominey, Jr., age 70, passed away peacefully in the Seasons Hospice Home in Milton, Massachusetts on Thursday, July 27, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on December 23, 1946, he was the son of the late Harry C. and Catherine (Cavanaugh) Tominey. He spent his first six years in Jamaica Plain before his family settled on Alice Avenue in Walpole. Growing up in Walpole, Harry attended the Walpole Public Schools and loved playing Little League and spending the winters playing hockey on the local ponds. He went on to graduate from Walpole High School with the Class of 1965. While finishing his senior year, Harry enlisted in the United States Navy, proudly serving his country.

Upon his discharge from the Navy, Harry passed the police officer's exam and enrolled in the Police Academy. His first job was as a patrolman with the Medfield Police Department, however after a year, he transferred to the Walpole Police Department and began taking night classes at Northeastern University.

Harry met his wife, Ruth-Ellen Calcagni, in 1977 and they were married the same year on October 1st. They made their home together in Walpole, where they welcomed their daughter, Liz. Harry returned to school, taking night classes at Boston College, before earning his Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from Western New England College in 1990.

Harry loved being a patrolman and walking the beat in Walpole Center for many years, however he felt a calling to give back to the children in his community, and did so by accepting the position of D.A.R.E. Officer. He mentored middle school students for many years, teaching them about the effects and dangers of drug use. He could be found in all of the Walpole parades driving the Police Department's Corvette, waving to everyone, with his big smile. Harry retired from the Police Department in 2002 after 34 years of dedicated service to the community of Walpole.

In his retirement, Harry found a job as a Court Security Officer at the Moakley Federal Courthouse in Boston, where he worked for an additional 10 years. After his retirement from the courthouse, he began working with the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home and served as a legislative aide to State Senator, Jim Timilty. In all three of these retirement jobs, Harry used his wonderful social skills to find lasting friendships.

Throughout his life, Harry loved sports, both participating in them as well as following his favorite New England Sports Teams. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved spending time at his home away from home in East Burke, Vermont, where Harry spent countless hours on the ski slopes and walking his two Golden Retrievers. His favorite thing to do, however, was to go for a run. He was truly a fantastic athlete, completing the Boston Marathon 6 times, including the 100th.

More than anything, Harry loved his family. Harry had a deep love for Ruth-Ellen, as they were married for almost 40 years. His daughter, Liz, held an incredibly special place in his heart, and he drove her to all her events, occasionally even in the police car. Liz returned the favor after Harry became ill, as she moved back to Walpole to help care for him and drive him to all of his appointments. She brought along her Golden Retriever, Buttercup, who brought Harry so much comfort, as he developed a loving connection with her as well.

Beloved husband of Ruth-Ellen (Calcagni) Tominey.
Loving father of Elizabeth D. Tominey and her husband Jeff Reed of New York City.
Brother in law of Della A. Calcagni of Delray Beach, Florida.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend Harry's Life Celebration on Tuesday, August 1, 2017 from 4-8 PM in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home, 48 Common Street, Walpole.
