Obituary

Dr. David W. Haughey of Walpole, age 91, passed away peacefully in the Serenity Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Wrentham, Massachusetts on Monday, March 20, 2017. Born in Newton, Massachusetts on April 13, 1925, he was the son of the late John D. and Grace (Fowler) Haughey. He was raised in Newton and graduated from Newton High School with the Class of 1942. After graduation, David continued his education at Northeastern University, majoring in Mechanical Engineering. However, after the outbreak of World War II, David enlisted in the United States Army. He was stationed with the Army Corps of Engineers, serving in both the European and Pacific Theater of Operations, in addition to serving on the home front. In 1946, David was honorably discharged, after earning the rank of Technician 5th Grade.

Upon his return home, David began taking classes to earn his Bachelor's Degree at Boston University. He graduated cum laude, with his degree in Psychology in 1948. He went on to earn his Master's Degree in Abnormal Psychology from BU in 1949 and earned his PhD in Clinical Psychology from Boston University in 1960.

David had a long career in the Psychology Field, he began working as an intern at the USVA Hospital in Bedford before taking a Psychologist position at the Brockton Area Mental Health Center, under the Massachusetts Division of Mental Health, where he was later promoted to Mental Health Coordinator and Assistant Director. At the same time, he worked part-time as a Consulting Psychologist for group therapy at the Crittenden-Hastings House, Florence Crittenden League of Compassion. In 1958, he took the position of Mental Health Coordinator for the Massachusetts Division of Legal Medicine and a year later was appointed Director of Psychological Research for the Massachusetts Department of Correction. He continued expanding his career, serving as a Consulting Psychologist at the Brockton Hospital Alcoholism Clinic and founding his own private practice. David enjoyed not only the practice of Psychology, but also passing his knowledge on to future generations, taking an Associate Professor's position at Boston State College and later becoming a full-time member of Boston State's Psychology Department. In addition to his private practice, David spent 44 years working as a Consulting Psychologist for the Center for Career Development and Ministry. He retired 6 years ago, at the age of 85.

He was a life member of the American Psychological Association, the New England Psychological Association, and the Massachusetts Psychological Association, in addition to being a long-time member of the Eastern Psychological Association.

Outside of his career, David loved physical activity. He was an avid hiker, mountain climber, and runner; running the Boston Marathon 3 times in 1976, 1977, and 1979. In addition, he loved playing squash on the weekends at the University Club in Boston. David enjoyed quiet time as well, painting with water colors and listening to a variety of music. He was a man of great integrity and dignity, who was always modest throughout his life. David had a wonderful ability to connect with people and could hone in on what they needed to hear.

Loving father of David Haughey, Jr. of Dorchester, Ellen Giurleo of West Wareham, Richard Haughey of Somerville, Andrea Higgins of Walpole, the late Peter Haughey, the late John Luther Haughey, and the late Elizabeth Higgins-Merriman.
Cherished grandfather of Meghan Bilz of New Hampshire and Douglas Haughey of Rhode Island and great grandfather of Madeline Bilz.
Brother of Elizabeth Wolf of Needham, Lawrence Haughey of Florida, the late John Haughey, Daniel Haughey, Grace Krosschelle, and William Haughey.
Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend David's Life Celebration on Sunday, March 26, 2017 from 2-5 PM in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home, 48 Common Street, Walpole. A Funeral Service will be held in the Epiphany Episcopal Church, 62 Front Street, Walpole on Monday, March 27, 2017 at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow in Saint Joseph's Cemetery in West Roxbury. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
