Tribute & Message From The Family

Richard L. Ordway, Sr., age 60, passed away peacefully in the Norwood Hospital in Norwood, Massachusetts on Tuesday, August 14, 2018. Born in Natick, Massachusetts on November 7, 1957, he was the son of the late Ronald and Nora (Gagnon) Ordway. He was raised in Natick, Massachusetts, attending Natick High School, graduating with the Class of 1975. After graduation, Rich began his long Roche Brothers career in Natick. It was while working in the West Roxbury location, that Rich met his wife, Cheryl O'Connor.

Rich and Cheryl were married on April 20, 1991 in the First Church of Dedham and made their home together in West Roxbury. They welcomed four children, Alexandra in 1993, Richard, Jr. in 1994, Matthew in 1996, and Samantha in 1998. Rich was truly dedicated to his career and family, eventually moving them out of the city, settling in the small town of Walpole. His hard work payed off, as he was called from working in the Roche Brothers stores to serve in their corporate office, where he remained until June of last year.

While Rich spent many hours working, he was most dedicated to his family. As a devoted father to his four children, Rich spent countless hours volunteering as a coach for various sports and was always his children's biggest cheerleader. His absolute favorite times were spent with his wife, Cheryl, and their children.

Beloved husband of Cheryl O'Connor-Ordway.
Loving father of Alexandra E. Ordway, Richard L. Ordway, Jr, Matthew P. Ordway and Samantha N. Ordway all of Walpole.

Ordway, Jr (Susan Trust) of Hudson, James Ordway (Deborah) of Natick, Lester Ordway (Susanne) of Standish, ME, David Ordway (Christine) of Natick, and Kevin Ordway (Barb) of Natick.

I am so saddened to hear of my dear friends passing. Richie and I were the closest of childhood friends and neighbors growing up. From elementary school to high school we were inseparable and I loved him like a brother. We had recently re-connected and were texting just a few months ago. He told me he was ill but he never told me how serious it was. My heart breaks for his family and I pray the lord will keep you and comfort you in your time of grief.

God Bless

My heartfelt condolences to you and your family! I was Rich's physical therapist a year ago and he was such a wonderful man! I recall our great conversations about baseball and he was always so interested in my 3 boys and what they were up to. He always showed up, regardless of how he felt and gave it his all. More than anything, I remember how lovingly he spoke about all of you. My prayers are with you during this time.

We all have that person we enjoy having a beer with. Problem was, Richie was that person to everyone. We'd meet at the Corrib Pub, Richie would arrive and say, "Ok brothers, 2 quick fast ones and I goota go." And go he did, often times diappearing out the side door while we were all laughing hysterically, we didn't even see him leave!! He had other committments, Family!!!!!! Home is where Richie needed to be. Richie always made you feel the time you spent with him was important to him. It was to us too Rich!! This weekend, I'm sure, at some point we will find ourselves at the Corrib Pub. I'll be having 2 quick fast ones for my friend Richie, who's now home for good!! R.I.P. my friend.

I was so sorry to hear that you lost a great husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend. Richie always bragged about how lucky he was to have such a wonderful family. You meant the world to him. I know how close you were and what an influence he had on your life. I share your grief in this profound loss. He was one of the most dynamic, industrious, curious, and mischievous men I've known. He could always lift my spirits, or fire me up, depending on the circumstances. He was also a fighter. He fought this battle long and hard so he could be with you. That's just who he was. The picture you've chosen for the announcement captures the essence of the person I will always remember. That spark will never be diminished. I hope it comforts you to know that your grief is shared by all of us that knew Richie. He will be missed greatly and remembered often. You have my very deepest sympathy..... Pamela Ross-Kung

I was disabled for a period of time and I encountered Mr. Ordway at the Quincy Store many years ago. Quite honestly, I was no real fan of Roche Bros Stores, however, I remember Mr. Ordway (and he had another brother who also managed Roche Bros Stores) . Richard Ordway was always kind and helpful to me and he really stood out from the run of the mill managers. He seemed to be bright and he certainly was very forthright. His family can always be so proud of him because he was truly genuine and compassionate. The world has lost a great guy. Jayd, formerly of Westwood, MA

I am very saddened to hear of Richie's passing. Rich was one of my first real bosses, at Roche Brothers. Rich was demanding but always fair. Work hard for him, and he would reward you. Rich was a devoted family man, as he was always present at school and sporting events. Years later, I had the pleasure to employ his son Rick. I could see within the first day that Richie Ordway's traits and work habits had rubbed off on his boy. To the Ordway and O'Connor families, my deepest condolences.
